FPSE provides final submission for Avison post-secondary review

The Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC (FPSE) met twice with Don Avison as part of the provincial government review process mandated by the Ministry. Our second meeting took place February 23, 2026. Avison attended the FPSE office, and several local presidents joined the meeting online. A productive exchange of ideas occurred, and the parties expressed general consensus on the complexity and cost of mergers, the need for a robust system of rural post-secondary education, and the importance of a system of non-repayable student financial assistance. However, Avison emphasized the points that the special purpose teaching universities (SPTUs) have moved far beyond their original mandate and that the status quo is no longer viable. These considerations were reflected in our final submission. We now await Avison’s final report and will provide a comprehensive analysis of that report when it is released.
