The unfolding events south of the border have put a chill on equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives (EDI) on campuses across the United States. This emboldened attack on EDI is also seeping into the political discourse in Canada, with at least one political leader running on a platform of opposition to so-called ‘woke’ policies. This kind of veiled language is clearly an attack on EDI writ large and on campus that seeks to emulate the dystopia unfolding to our South.
In light of these increased attacks, FPSE reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting and promoting EDI. We continue to fight for the principles of evidence-based research, academic freedom and freedom of expression, hiring practices that promote EDI, and the vital work of decolonizing our institutions.
In our society, equity, diversity, and inclusion are not merely ideals to aspire to, but essential foundations for a just and thriving community. We recognize that every individual brings unique experiences, perspectives, and abilities that enhance our collective strength and innovation. And in order to hear those voices and ensure meaningful equity and diversity, we need concrete commitments and changes to how our institutions operate.
Our collective responsibility is to actively work to dismantle systemic barriers that hinder participation and equity for all. This means ensuring that our policies and practices are not only inclusive but also equitable, providing equal opportunities for every member of our community regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances.
We commit to fostering an environment where diversity is not just acknowledged, but celebrated, and every voice is heard. This involves not just representation, but also genuine engagement in decision-making processes. We believe that true progress can be achieved only when all individuals feel valued and empowered to contribute their perspectives.
In our pursuit of a more equitable federation and society, we must prioritize education and awareness around EDI, while also holding ourselves accountable to promote change within our institutions. Together, we can build a future that reflects our shared values of justice and respect for all.
Let us stand united in our unwavering commitment to equity, ensuring that no one is left behind and that our federation is truly inclusive and reflects the combined strength of its 10,000 members.
