‘Really scary’: VIU Faculty says deficit is $11.6 million more than first reported
Chek News (September 17, 2025)
VIU’s Faculty Association told CHEK News Wednesday, that many more cuts at VIU were about to be announced.
“They intend to cut more faculty, there’s more layoffs planned,” said Gara Pruesse, the president of the VIU Faculty Association.
According to Pruesse, a budget being presented to the VIU Board of Governors on Thursday will reveal another $11.6 million in the university’s deficit for this fiscal year; that is in addition to the $9 million deficit, that VIU previously identified, in June.
“And this is like breaking news about this budget. We’ve only known about it for a week that we are actually in a much more dire financial situation than what was originally painted back in June, when they released the budget,” said Pruesse.
